QGIS Print Layouts

Print Layouts are a distinct module within QGIS, used to create map layouts for printing or publication:

  • Print layouts Layouts are saved to the QGIS project file (.qgz), so are directly linked to the project

  • There can be many print layouts in one project

  • Layouts can be saved as templates and reused in other projects

When you have prepared the Print Layout layout in this exercise, save it to the S: drive - the instructor will give you the location.

Prepare a map for printing

  1. Open one of the maps you have been working on in this course, and spend ten minutes or so tidying it up in preparation for printing:

    1. work out what the map is going to present (this might also be its title)

    2. make sure you have the right layers showing - not too many, not too few

    3. review the styling for the layers to ensure it’s showing what you want, the way you want it

    4. choose an appropriate scale and background layer (if needed)

  2. Save the project

Create a Layout

  1. Go to Project > New Print Layout

  2. Choose a name for the layout

  3. The layout window will open showing a blank page

  4. Populate the page with at least the following map elements (and include others if you have time)

    1. appropriate size and orientation

    2. Legend: make sure only the layers showing in the map are included

    3. Scalebar

    4. Title

    5. Metadata: e.g. date of production, name of producer, scale

    6. Overview map: showing wider area with indicator showing extent of main map

    7. Graphic: from the images folder, or downloaded from the Internet

  1. If you have time, try adding other elements from the toolbar, including

    1. Table: showing relevant data

    2. Expression: to display dynamic data, such as date or user name

  2. When you are finished, export the layout as a PDF with your name in the filename, and copy it to the S: drive as instructed
