9. QGIS Print Layouts
Print Layouts are a distinct module within QGIS, used to create map layouts for printing or publication:
Layouts are saved to the QGIS project file (.qgz), so are directly linked to the project
There can be many print layouts in one project
Layouts can be saved as templates and reused in other projects
When you have prepared the layout in this exercise, save it to the S: drive - the instructor will give you the location.
9.1. Prepare a map for printing
Open one of the maps you have been working on in this course, and spend ten minutes or so tidying it up in preparation for printing:
work out what the map is going to present (this might also be its title)
make sure you have the right layers showing - not too many, not too few
review the styling for the layers to ensure it’s showing what you want, the way you want it
choose an appropriate scale and background layer (if needed)
Save the project
9.2. Create a Layout
Go to Project > New Print Layout
Choose a name for the layout
The layout window will open showing a blank page - you may need to use the Zoom Full button to show the page at a sensible scale
Using the toolbar on the left (and include others if you have time), add elements to the page:
Add Map: at an appropriate size and orientation
Add Legend: make sure only the layers showing in the map are included
Add Scalebar
Add Label: to add a text box for the title, and another for metadata (e.g. date of production, name of producer, scale)
Add Map: a second, smaller map showing a wider area, with indicator showing extent of main map
Add Picture: from the images folder, or downloaded from the Internet
If you have time, try adding other elements from the toolbar, including
Add Attribute Table: showing relevant data
Insert/Edit Expression and Dynamic Text in a Label: to display dynamic data, such as date or user name
When you are finished, export the layout as a PDF with your name in the filename, and copy it to the S: drive as instructed
