What is Metadata?
Metadata means "data about data" and is defined as the data providing information about one or more aspects of that data. It is used to summarise basic information about your data which can make searching and working with specific data easier such as:
- Means of creation of the data
- Purpose of the data
- Date and time of creation
- Author of the data
- Location of the data
- The standards used
Why use Metadata?
Metadata is created and collected because it enables and improves the use of that data and ensures that you will be able find, use, and preserve and re-use data in the future. It also helps you to:
- Fulfil your INSPIRE obligation
- Manage Enterprise Metadata i.e. internal metadata within your entire organisation
